HEADING: TEMASEK DESIGN SCHOOL’S TAEKWONDO STARS

A chance encounter with taekwondo (TKD) groups in community centres developed into a lifetime passion for two students of Temasek Design School.

Today, Jared Mah Jiawei and Jason Tan Junwei are both on the national taekwondo team, and among the young sports stars who are placing Singapore on the international sporting map.

Jared, a second year student in the Diploma in Product and Industrial Design course, helped Singapore clinch the bronze medal at the 2009 World Taekwondo Hanmadang, South Korea, in August this year. This prestigious international competition is regarded as the Olympics of taekwondo competitions.

The eight members of the Singapore team who were at the this year’s Hanmadang competition, included TDS graduate Mawei Zhen, who pursued her Diploma in Interior Architecture and Design.

The Singapore team pitched their skills against 600 teams from 50 countries at the Hanmadang competition, and came in third behind the Philippines and Taiwan.

Jared commented: “It was an awesome experience which I thoroughly enjoyed.”

Jason, a first year student in the Diploma in Retail and Hospitality Design course and a national gold medalist, participated in the 19th World Taekwondo Championships in Denmark in October this year.

For Jared and Jason, their first encounters with TKD happened when they were eight and six years old respectively. Their growing devotion to the sport received strong support from their parents.

As Jason said: “My parents enrolled me into TKD training so that I could become fitter and stronger.”

He has never looked back since. When Jason was just eight years old, he represented Singapore at the 8th World Taekwondo Hanmadang. Eventually, Jason has been flying the flag at competitions throughout Asia.

Sports has always featured in Jared’s life, and his obsession qualified him for entry into the Singapore Sports School. However, Jared decided to focus more on academic pursuits, and crossed over to Temasek Design School.

Another choice had to be made: Jared was on the national sailing team as well, juggling his time between the Optimist and TKD training sessions throughout his secondary school days at Anglo Chinese Secondary School.

He decided to concentrate on TKD after completing his ‘O’ Levels, a decision he has never regretted.
